Forest Green Pilgrimage 15th June 2008

I thought you would be interested in reading Les Payne's report on what goes on behind the scenes in preparing for the visitors prior to their arrival.

"Rob and Bridget Tims, Frances & I arrived at The Mill early evening on the Saturday prior to the annual Forest Green Barbecue, and were given the keys to the Mill by the new guardians and left to sort ourselves out, this was easier than we imagined as the route to The Parrot was the same as both Rob and I remembered although it seemed a bit further.

Bedrooms were selected at random, although we did avoid Room 5 as the stories about the Miller's Daughter are still being repeated, not of course that either of us believe in that sort of thing.

Sunday morning started early, I awoke to find that Frances was missing, but was found in the memorial garden gathering sackfulls of fallen leaves, Rob and Bridget joined us at 7:45, which ensured that we could finish this task before sitting down to breakfast outside the Mill, something I had not done for over 40 years, as Rob reminded me.

As soon as Breakfast was over, we started preparing food for the expected 70 guests due to arrive around midday. Salads tossed, onions chopped, burgers and sausages prepared ready for cooking once the barbecue was ready, this was wheeled into place and the charcoal ignited, and then while the cooking temperature was reached, table and chairs were arranged on the area outside the Mill.

Guests began to arrive throughout the morning, many taking the annual walk around the site, others sitting and talking to new found "old" friends."

We were blessed, surprisingly, with good weather on our annual visit to The Mill where the new wardens made us very welcome. Around 55 attended with most succeding in making it to the top of Leith Hill,, in spite of indulging in a great barbeque. On our return we were greeted with strawberries and cream. Our thanks go to the organisers of this favourite event.

As you will know the Mill at Forest Green is being run on a more commercial basis. It is an ideal location for small conferences, parties, and private functions. For details of booking it for that special occasion the contacts are :- tel 01306 711005 or the indicating that you are making a MILL enquiry.

22nd July 2008 Annual Luncheon

Our annual lunch was held at the Saville Club at which twenty-eight attended. As always it was pleasant and enjoyable with a different group of members than last year. We hope that in 2009 the groups might combine to have an attendance of around forty. This year our speaker was Andrea Greystoke Headmistress of Abercorn School, who is a great supporter of our Association and very proud of the school's history.
